You do not need to worry and think hard whether you have already experienced the two phases or not. Or is it normal if we do not experience one of the two phases? Because as human, we surely have already experienced the two phases. Either the rapid eye movement phase or non rapid eye movement phase. To take note, the two phases happen alternately. When we are going to sleep, we usually laying down on our bed while staring at our ceiling. That is the phase when we are letting ourselves to feel sleepy. After that, most of us do not know what happen because we have already fallen asleep. But scientists state that once we close our eyes and sleep, we are in REM phase. This is the phase where we can easily waken up just by hearing some noises or some other distractions. Because we are not in the deep sleep phase yet. Do Babies Dream : Explanation About Deep Sleep
Why we have a dream not in the deep sleep phase? It is because our brain is still ‘working’ during the rapid eye movement phase. Different than the deep sleep phase where your brain is totally ‘shut down’ and rest. Where even if you hear some noises, you will not wake up. This theory lead to the question about do babies dream. Because, to support the question scientists state that babies have more time in rapid eye movement phase. If adults have 20% of their time in rapid eye movement phase, babies have up to 50% of their time in rapid eye movement. In short, the possibility of the babies have a dream is higher than the adults do. But again, we need to remember that what we experience and the babies experience is a two different thing that cannot be compared.

To add it up, they cannot communicate with us yet. Which even more support the facts that it would be hard for them to have a dream.
So how about the smile, giggle and other expressions that the babies made when they are sleeping? Can we conclude that actually the babies do dream? Once the babies wake up, they will start crying and we need to put them back to sleep again. Therefore, we need to carefully watch them as they are sleeping. Are they in they deep sleep? Or are they still in rapid eye movement phase? In time like this, we can also prevent some factors that have the possibility to wake up the babies. The babies tend to cry a lot if they sleep is distracted.

Since we cannot ask directly to the babies and since we cannot observe anything regarding dreams with the babies. But yes, babies have the higher chance to get a dream based on their rapid eye movement phase but we also need to consider their ability to memorize things and experience new things. If they still cannot remember anything, it is likely they do not have any dream instead of just sleeping in their rapid eye movement phase.
