Sleep regression is a phrase that may be unfamiliar to you when you don’t have a baby, but when you have a baby that awaken after just 20 minutes nap or sleep, you are experiencing a baby sleep regression. First thing, what is this sleep regression? It is a condition when a baby who’s sleeping well, suddenly awaken and having less sleeping time than they usually have. This symptom is usually happening for certain period of time with no clear reason as to why it is occurring to the babies. This sleep regression can be very frustrating for the parents as well as raising the risk of disturbing the health of the baby. When Is Baby Sleep Regression Happening?
There is some period of time of this sleep regression. The first period is the four-month sleep regression, which is a permanent change for their sleeping habit. Within this period of time, your baby will not sleep like usual, and they will often waking up at night with lots of fussing around and less napping time. if your baby experience something like this, then it is best to ask the doctors about the baby sleep regression and if it’s necessary to get special treatments. The second period of sleep regression is the eight-month sleep regression, which sometimes can extend to ten-month sleep regression. Because a lot of development are happening for babies at this age, sleep regression may occur. At this age, babies will have a lot physical as well as brain development like learning to crawl, learning their surrounding and getting familiar with things around them. This period is also the best period for babies to learn a language. All of this activities will results in more waking time at night, less time for a nap and cranky mood of the baby.
Another period of baby sleep regression is the 11 or 12-month sleep regression. This period of sleep regression usually only occurs in some babies. At this period of time, you may find your baby to have less napping time at the day. Some of them even refuse to take more than one napping time, and parents often think that this habit is a normal one but it is recommended to check your baby to a doctor to find out the problem. The next sleep regression period is the 18-month sleep regression. At this time, your baby is a toddler already and they can walk and babbling or talk. And this baby sleep regression may occur because of your toddler’s new experience of independence. They can choose their options and they also have opinions on things. Not to mention they also teething around this period of times. It may make your toddler have less sleep both naps and night sleep.
